Walking/Bicycling

Walking to work or school is a healthy, no-cost way to commute. Whether you walk the entire distance or split your commute with public transportation, walking gets your heart pumping. It clears your mind as you start the day, and helps alleviate stress as you walk home. In addition to being good for you, walking is non-polluting and free! For another healthy and economical way to commute, try bicycling. If the distance seems daunting, remember that most buses offer bike carriers. Simply load up your bicycle and ride public transit to a convenient stopping point, then pedal the remaining stretch. What a great way to get in shape, save money and help the environment!

Safety Tips:

  • Plan your route by driving it first
  • Use sidewalks or trails where available
  • Know and follow all traffic laws
  • Take a predictable and visible place in traffic
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Carry a mobile phone and drinking water
  • Wear high quality shoes for walking and a correctly fitted helmet for bicycling
  • For night commutes, carry a light while walking and utilize lights on the front
  • and back of your bike
  • Dress suitably at night and in bad weather
  • Regularly maintain your bike, and inspect it before every trip
  • Use a bike-mounted bag for storage
